What does Amazon's latest move mean for the UK's grocery sector?

Big news in the UK grocery world. With retailers already tackling the challenge of moving to online and the complexities involved, not to mention the dilutive impact on margins currently involved, news that Amazon is simplifying its grocery offering may well be unwelcome.

Amazon's growing dominance of online retail and the investment it continues to make in fulfilment processes and technology puts them in a good position to capture a decent proportion of market share. Add to that the focus on the most-sticky of Amazon's customer-base - Prime members - and the convenience of ordering through the tech giant, the UK's grocers may have cause for concern. And, it's not just the traditional grocers who may be raising an eyebrow or two, Ocada may well be looking over their shoulder and keeping a keen eye on Bezos' behemoth's latest move.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, UK online retailers have been operating at full capacity. Omnichannel retailers will be happy for shoppers to return to stores to improve total profitability. However, Amazon, without a store estate, will want shoppers to continue to order their groceries online, and will use free, and faster deliveries to attract them.
